Catching Up With Lamborghini Squadra Corse Factory Drivers Giacomo Altoè and Albert Costa

To celebrate the latest launch in our ongoing collaboration with Automobili Lamborghini, The 10,000 spoke with factory drivers Giacomo Altoè and Albert Costa. First founded in 2013 within the Research & Development department, Squadra Corse provides an integrated approach to Lamborghini driving experiences; from driving course programs with road vehicles to motorsport competitions, through the Lamborghini Super Trofeo and championships of the GT class. Read on to learn more about both Giacomo Altoè and Albert Costa, including how they first got involved in motorsports, their favorite race tracks and their pre-race routines.

Tell us about your first Lamborghini Squadra Corse race, and how you initially got involved in motorsports.

Giacomo Altoè: I got involved in motorsport because my family owns a circuit in Italy, the Adria International Speedway, so I started to drive when I was really young. My first race with Lamborghini was in 2018 in the Super Trofeo Middle East. The team confirmed my participation just a few days before the race so I jumped in a plane and after the landing I just had the time for a few laps. But I got the pole position in the ProAm class.

Albert Costa: I will never forget my first race with Lamborghini. It was in France at Le Castellet circuit -- and racing and also winning my debut race with Giacomo has been really really special. When I was very young I started with motorbikes then karting when I was 9 years old. I won my first kart race and I immediately fell in love with the four wheels.

To be part of Squadra Corse is a dream come true. Every driver wants to become a pro and also a Factory Driver for an important brand and I did it! Lamborghini Squadra Corse opened its doors and now I’m part of the family. I'm really proud to be part of it and I hope to stay here for many many years. Furthermore I also speak Italian so I feel even closer to my colleagues working in the headquarters.

Do you have a favorite race or course and if so, which one and why?

GA: Of course, my favourite track is Adria, because it is where I moved my first steps! Racing and driving just a few meters away from my house is something really special.

AC: My favourite race is the 24 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps, because it’s the “Big One” and one of the most important races in the world and also because Spa is one of my favourite tracks. It’s special because in a 24 hour race every detail is so important and the strategy likewise. And also because of the atmosphere: meeting with all the other drivers in the centre of Spa before the race, with a lot of fans is something really special.

Talk to us about your pre-race routine. Does music or sound play a part in your preparation?

GA: I don't really have a specific routine but I like to train quite a lot the days before the race. Then the hours before the race I like to stay alone, stay focused on the target and listen to my favourite music.

AC: I have a routine: a lot of preparation, watching on board footage and races from the previous years. I like to listen to some music to get in shape and also to play table tennis to improve my reflexes and do some exercise before jumping into the car to warm-up my body. And of course it’s important to eat very healthy.

What advice would you give to someone interested in becoming a race car driver, and who or what has inspired your motorsport career thus far?

GA: Work hard, be humble but also confident in yourself because you never know when the right moment comes. And when it comes you must be ready to catch your opportunity.

AC: My inspiration in motorsport was my dad because he was a great motorbike driver and he won a lot. My brother has been my motivation: when I was a kid he was my reference and I always tried to be faster than him. We fought a lot and for sure, I have learned a lot from him.
